British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, located using intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of entry passages down to the site... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among thousands of UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out militants who endanger our safety, shows how British military are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military executed what it described as a "major assault" targeting IS targets in Syria, following an assault killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
