A shadow economy for unapproved weight-loss drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on messaging platforms, according to new investigations.
Experimental Drug Gaining Traction Via Social Media
Retatrutide, which is still in clinical trials, is being promoted by online personalities for its supposed fat-burning properties. Viewers are urged to message these profiles privately for source information, while also receiving discount codes.
Active Commerce on Social Networks
Separately, a robust trade exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of participants share comparison photos, injection guides and assertions of next-day British shipping. Vendors market the drug there before directing buyers to other platforms for purchases.
Understanding Retatrutide
This medication is an investigational injectable created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug targets three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Early trials indicate it could help patients reduce up to a quarter of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed online as the successor to Ozempic.
Healthcare Professionals Express Concerns
However, doctors and chemists have warned that the sale of what remains an unlicensed medication in the UK is a cause for concern and could result in individuals injecting substances of uncertain source.
Several professionals said the demand for the experimental drug could be linked to the increasing cost of licensed weight loss products such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Status and Implementation
Selling retatrutide on social media or messaging apps is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved medication that cannot be promoted or distributed for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.
Some influencers try to circumvent the regulations by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted drug, but advertising and distribution can still breach pharmaceutical, marketing, and consumer regulations, risking penalties, prosecution or prison.
Platform Response and Content Elimination
According to TikTok, the platform has taken down violative material and banned associated keywords and query recommendations. The organization stated it was dedicated to keeping the service secure and investing in strengthening enforcement strategies.
Digital Trading Activities
Research also discovered communities with up to nine thousand participants selling the experimental drug using Telegram's built-in discovery tool, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” instantly brings up groups with numerous of members, populated with images of slimming results, glowing reviews and step-by-step instructions for preparing or injecting at home.
Within moments of joining one community, a vendor posted WhatsApp details, where the majority of transactions take place. The seller provided an guidebook and guaranteed delivery within two days. When questioned whether the product was genuine, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a alleged laboratory certificate. Not one asked about body mass, medical conditions or previous experience.
Product Information and Pricing
Inside these groups, posts display dark colored packages with Royal Mail labels, stating to contain fresh supplies. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can select between dry substance containers, mixed at home with sterile water, or pre-filled injectors typically sold at 160 pounds for 20mg. When questioned how long a pen should last, vendors give conflicting responses varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Platform Moderation and Security Measures
A representative for the messaging service stated it regularly monitored harmful material on its platform including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Medical Expert Cautions
“Individuals are administering materials they can’t verify. Even if the research behind retatrutide is sound, these online versions may not contain what they claim,” stated Jason Murphy, the head of pharmaceutical services at a pharmacy service.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service connected the increase in interest to current price rises for approved slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, individuals are using social media. But fake treatments are extremely dangerous. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the conditions they were made in was sterile,” she said.
Her staff has previously encountered individuals harmed by self-injection from unconfirmed sources. “We recognize the disappointment, but buying from messaging apps or communication platforms is taking chances with your well-being,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be impure or improperly measured.”
Manufacturer Position
A representative from Eli Lilly stated retatrutide was in phase 3 research studies and had not been evaluated or approved by any government authority globally. “Consequently at this time no one can market [it] for human use,” they explained, adding that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly investigational product not yet approved … may subject users to potentially significant medical dangers”.
