The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Sees Significant Alliance Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several leading political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
